History:
In April 2011, Cambridge City Council granted "Ad-Lib" a plot of land off Mill Road in Cambridge. We have spent 10 months working tirelessly with the local community and local environmental organisation 'Transition Cambridge', to turn the once derelict space into a beautiful sustainable garden for everyone to use. And we have definitely made great progress thanks to the help of lots of willing volunteers and some very kind donations! The Garden boasts flower and vegetable beds, a social space for picnics and events, a children's garden, a herb garden, and a wildlife area. These are all works in progress and have been suggested and shaped by the local community.
How does it work?
The Community Garden project is run and maintained by volunteers from the local community, facilitated by "Ad-Lib" and 'Transition Cambridge'. The space is available for anyone to use at any time: to work the land; to gather the produce; to sit and relax; to bring friends, a book, or a cup of tea; to hold events; or to attend workshops and gatherings. The project receives no funding and relies on the time and efforts of dedicated volunteers. Volunteers meet each fortnight to dig, plant, weed, improve and enjoy the garden.
What do I need to know?
Everyone is welcome regardless of age or experience. Some of our youngest gardeners aren't even walking yet! Even if getting hands dirty is not your cup-of-tea, please come down, have some tea and cake and meet people! It is as much about bringing the community together as it is about gardening!
Refreshments and guidance are always provided! Tools and gloves are also available, although if you have your own, it's always useful to bring them. Garden Days usually take place between 1pm and 3pm on either a Saturday or a Sunday, and volunteers drop in and out whenever they like.
Where is the Garden?
The Garden is on the junction of Madras Road and Marmora Road, off Mill Road in Cambridge.
How do I get involved?
Contact us on 07988 735422, email info@ad-lib.org.uk, or pop down to the Garden during the next advertised session. We would love to meet you!
The Garden aims to bring the local community together in a space for leisure and relaxation, to provide people with gardening and sustainable lifestyle skills, and to grow produce for the benefit of local people.
